Stepped
in History and a seat of Royality since its inception, the History
of Kapurthala is intimately connected with that of Ahluwalia dynasty
founded by Baba Jassa Singh (1718-1783), one of the greatest Sikh
leaders in the history of Punjab. Baba Jassa Singh passed away
in 1783, and his lineage was carried on by chauin of Ahluwalia
Rulers: Maharajas Fateh Singh, Nihal Singh, Randhir Singh and
Kharak Singh who was succeeded by his 5 year old gradson, Jagatjit
Singh (1872-1949) who ruled the State for 71 years.
The
caravan of the Royal history of Kapurthala has run its course.
Despite the new winds of change and progress, Kapurthala has been
preserving its Regal ethos and its culture identity. The Kapurthala
Heritage Trust, under the chairmanship of Brig.(Retd.) Sukhjit
Singh (grandson of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh) is doing a herculean
task in Preseving the Royal heritageof Kapurthala.
Kapurthala
was founded in the 11th century by Rana Kapur of Jaisalmer, from
whom it derives its name. Kapurthala measures 1,633 sq. km; and
comprises of two non-contiguous parts of jalandhar Doab between
the rivers Beas and Sutlej. Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi and Bholath
make one section and Phagwara the other.
Kapurthala
is a well planned city with Royal past, which sy,bolizes an attitude
and a way of life typical of its cultural ethos and secular outlook
cultivated by its liberal and secular Rulers. The tinkling of
sacred bells in the temples, the deep-throated azaan from the
Masjids, the chant of the sacred psalms from the Churches, and
the holy jaikaras from the Gurdwaras are like a spiritual sympony.
